Why nickel plating cover on metallization of ceramics?

Regarding Metalized Ceramics, an additional nickel plating is needed to cover on the metallization. Why does need nickel plating there? Firstly, it brings sufficient wettability of the Al2O3 metallization by the solder; Secondly, it prevents the metallization into oxidizing in the transportation, storage process, especially in humidity air. Thirdly, it helps to dustproof, moisture proof, anti-contamination.

The typical thickness of nickel plating is from 2 microns to 6 microns. There are 2 kinds of different processing for nickel plating, the one is electroplating, another one is electroless plating (also call as Chemically plating). The electroless plating processing offers more uniform layer thicknesses with high hardness, corrosion protection and wear resistance.
